Health Insurance for Sedona's Self-Employed, Retirees, and Small Businesses

Health Insurance for Sedona's Self-Employed, Retirees, and Small Businesses
Sedona's population is unusual in the best way — a mix of artists, outdoor-industry professionals, remote workers, consultants, small-business owners, and a large retiree community. That diversity means there is no single right answer for health coverage. Here is how to think about health insurance in Sedona, whether you are buying your own plan, turning 65, or offering coverage to a small team.
If you buy your own coverage: the ACA marketplace
For self-employed professionals, freelancers, early retirees, and anyone without employer coverage, the ACA (Affordable Care Act) marketplace is where individual and family health insurance lives. Open Enrollment runs November 1 through January 15 each year in Arizona, and Special Enrollment periods open up after qualifying life events — marriage, a new baby, a move, or losing employer coverage.
The marketplace offers four metal tiers — Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum — each balancing premium against out-of-pocket costs differently. Bronze has the lowest premium and highest out-of-pocket; Platinum is the reverse. The right tier depends on how much care you expect to use in a year.
You may qualify for a subsidy — and it can be substantial
Many Arizona households qualify for a premium tax credit (subsidy) that is applied directly to their monthly premium. Subsidy eligibility is based on household income and size, and the expanded subsidy rules mean even households above 400% of the federal poverty level can often qualify. We run the numbers using your actual income so you see your real net cost across tiers and carriers — at no cost to you.
Networks matter in Northern Arizona
A plan is only as good as the doctors and hospitals you can actually use. In Sedona and the Verde Valley, that means checking whether a plan's network includes the providers in Cottonwood, Flagstaff, and the Verde Valley Medical Center — and whether your prescriptions are on the plan's formulary. We verify networks before you enroll so there are no surprises at the pharmacy or the specialist's office.
If you are turning 65: Medicare decisions
Sedona has a large retiree community, and the year you turn 65 brings a set of important Medicare decisions. You have two main paths:
- Original Medicare + Medigap (Medicare Supplement). You keep broad doctor access nationwide, and a Medigap policy pays the deductibles and coinsurance that Original Medicare does not. You pay a separate monthly premium for the supplement and a separate Part D drug plan.
- Medicare Advantage (Part C). A private plan replaces Original Medicare, typically bundling hospital, medical, and often prescription, dental, and vision coverage — usually with low or zero premium, but with networks and cost-sharing.
The right choice depends on your doctors, your prescriptions, your travel patterns, and your budget. We compare both paths side by side during Annual Enrollment (October 15 – December 7) and beyond, and we help you evaluate networks for Yavapai and Coconino counties.
Small businesses: group health and benefits
If you run a Sedona small business with employees, offering health coverage is one of the most effective retention and recruiting tools you have. For smaller teams we evaluate SHOP marketplace plans, and for growing businesses we look at level-funded plans that can offer savings for a healthy group. We set up the carrier, handle enrollment, and provide ongoing administration support — and we can layer in dental, vision, life, and supplemental benefits as part of a complete package.
Short-term and gap coverage
Between jobs, waiting for Open Enrollment, or needing temporary coverage? Short-term health insurance can bridge a gap. It is not a substitute for ACA coverage (it does not cover pre-existing conditions the same way and is not ACA-compliant), but in specific situations it can be the right short-term tool. We will tell you honestly whether it fits your situation or whether you qualify for a Special Enrollment instead.
Coordination with the rest of your coverage
Health insurance does not exist in isolation. For self-employed clients, we often coordinate health coverage with a life policy (income protection for the family), disability coverage (income protection if you cannot work), and a business overhead expense policy if you own a business. One coordinated program closes the gaps between policies.
